The present temple was built in the early 18th century by King Vijayaraya Chakravarti II, though some accounts place it in the 17th century. The idol is unusual. Unlike most temples, the main image of Goddess Mariamman is made of sand, clay and medicinal herbs, not stone. That’s why the usual abhishekam (sacred bathing) isn’t done on the main deity. Instead, it’s performed on a small stone image placed in front.
