Uraiyur Nachiyar Temple: Timings, Legend & Visitor Guide

The Uraiyur Nachiyar temple, officially the Azhagiya Manavala Perumal temple, is a Divya Desam in Uraiyur, about 3 km from Trichy’s Chathiram Bus Stand. It is the only one of the 108 Divya Desams where the goddess, Kamalavalli Nachiyar, has a north-facing shrine and here she, not Vishnu, gets first honours at festivals.

Legend says she was born in Uraiyur as a Chola princess and married Lord Ranganatha of Srirangam at this very spot. This guide covers the legend, what to see, timings, festivals and how to get there. It is one of the oldest temples in and around Trichy and pairs easily with the city’s other sights.

The legend of Kamalavalli Nachiyar

The story of the Uraiyur Nachiyar temple is a love story between a Chola princess and the lord of Srirangam.

A baby in a lotus pond. Long ago, when Uraiyur was the capital of the Cholas, King Nanda Chola found a baby girl lying on a lotus in a temple tank. He named her Kamalavalli – “she of the lotus” – and raised her as his daughter. Devotees believe she was Lakshmi herself, born on earth.

A princess and a beautiful groom. When Kamalavalli grew up, she fell in love with Lord Ranganatha of Srirangam, just across the Kaveri. The Lord accepted her, and the two were married here in Uraiyur. That is why the Lord in this temple is called Azhagiya Manavalan – “the beautiful bridegroom” – and why the temple is lovingly called Nachiyar Kovil, the goddess’s temple.

The goddess comes first. Because this was the bride’s home, Kamalavalli Nachiyar is given precedence here. At festivals she receives the first honours, an unusual custom for a Vishnu temple. Her shrine faces north, which makes Uraiyur the only Divya Desam where the presiding goddess has a north-facing shrine.

History: from Chola capital to Divya Desam

The Uraiyur Nachiyar temple is one of the 108 Divya Desams, the Vishnu temples praised in the Tamil hymns of the Alvar saints. It is often counted second in importance after Srirangam. In the Nalayira Divya Prabandham, composed between the 7th and 9th centuries, Kulasekara Alvar sang 11 hymns and Thirumangai Alvar 13 hymns in praise of this temple.

Uraiyur is also believed to be the birthplace of Thiruppaan Alvar, one of the twelve Alvars, and the temple holds a 10-day festival in his honour.

The present structure is traced to the Medieval Cholas of the late 8th century, with later additions by the Pandyas, the Vijayanagar rulers and the Madurai Nayaks. It is built in the Dravidian style and managed today by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department of Tamil Nadu.

What to see at the Uraiyur Nachiyar temple

The temple is compact and calm compared with Srirangam, so you can see everything in under an hour.

  • The rajagopuram. A five-tiered gateway tower rises over Nachiyar Kovil Sannathi Street, and a granite wall encloses the whole complex.
  • Kamalavalli Nachiyar’s shrine. The heart of the temple. The goddess is shown seated, holding a lotus, in her north-facing shrine. Stop here first – it is the custom at this temple.
  • Azhagiya Manavalan’s sanctum. The Lord as the beautiful bridegroom, under the Kamala Vimanam (the tower above the sanctum).
  • Thiruppaan Alvar’s shrine. The temple honours the Alvar saint believed to have been born in Uraiyur, including a 10-day festival for him; ask the priests to point out his sannidhi.
  • Carved mandapams and pillars. Look for the sculptures on the pillared halls, added over several centuries.
  • The temple tanks. The temple is associated with four sacred tanks (pushkarinis), and legend places Kamalavalli’s discovery in a lotus tank.

A detail to taste: the food offered to Kamalavalli Nachiyar is traditionally prepared with pepper instead of chillies. If prasadam is available, try it. The temple also runs a daily annadhanam (free meal) scheme for devotees.

  • Mind the midday break. The temple closes around noon and reopens around 5 PM; don’t arrive at 1 PM.
