The legend of Vayalur

Murugan worships Shiva. According to tradition, Murugan came to Vayalur to worship his father Shiva. Needing water for the ritual, he struck the ground with his vel (spear), and a spring rose up. the temple tank now called the Sakthi Theertham (also Agni Theertham). That is why a temple officially dedicated to Shiva as Adinathar is best known for Murugan.

Arunagirinathar and the Thiruppugazh. The temple’s most famous story belongs to Arunagirinathar, the 15th-century saint-poet. Tradition says Murugan blessed him with the opening verses of the Thiruppugazh and commanded him to go on composing the work here. Arunagirinathar went on to write hundreds of songs to Murugan across Tamil Nadu, and he praised Vayalur as the first of his holy places so for Murugan devotees, this is where the Thiruppugazh began.

History

This temple dates to the Medieval Chola period of the 9th century, making it about 1,200 years old. The five-tiered rajagopuram at the entrance is a later addition. The temple’s sacred tree (sthala vriksham) is a vanni tree, on the left as you pass through the rajagopuram.

Devotees come here to pray for marriage, good health, education, jobs and success, and the temple follows the Kamika Agama tradition of worship.

What to see at the Vayalur Murugan temple

  • Murugan’s sanctum. Murugan here has one face and four hands, with Valli and Deivanai beside him and his peacock behind, facing east. This is the shrine most visitors come for.
  • Adinathar and Adinayaki. The presiding Shiva and his consort, in their own shrines – pay respects here too, as Murugan himself is said to have done.
  • The Nataraja idol. A rare image of Nataraja with both legs on the ground, unlike the usual raised-leg dancing pose.
  • Muthukumaraswamy. Another image of Murugan in the first prakaram (enclosure).
  • The Sakthi Theertham. The tank said to have been created by Murugan’s vel.
  • The vanni tree and rajagopuram. The sacred tree beside the five-tiered gateway.
